The Long Pendulum

Fifty-two years, sixteen swings. Each one is somebody solving a problem the other side had not solved yet — and the thing that solved it is almost never the aeroplane. It is a synchroniser, a squadron structure, a radar chain, a supercharger, a drop tank, a change of orders, or simply more factories.

Control, not power

No contest

Everyone had an engine light enough by 1903. Only the Wrights had roll control, and they kept it to themselves for five years while they tried to sell it. There is no pendulum here because there is nothing to contest: the aeroplane cannot yet carry a gun, a useful load, or itself very far.

A machine you can buy

No contest

The Gnome rotary made the aeroplane a product: light, air-cooled and reliable enough to sell to a customer. Armies bought them to look over the hill. Germany's edge in 1914 was not aerodynamic at all — it was the Zeppelin, which is what drove French and British aviation budgets. The aeroplane's job was still reconnaissance, and the B.E.2 was designed to be so stable it would fly itself while the observer worked.

1914 – 1918 has its own page

The First World War is where the pendulum swings fastest and where it is easiest to see, because one front and two sides is the whole picture. Eight eras, eighteen aircraft, the Fokker Scourge through to the D.VII.

The Fighter Pendulum — WWI →
III 1919 – 1926

The plateau

Nobody

The enabling change of this era is the absence of one. Disarmament, warehouses of surplus wartime airframes and no budget anywhere. Engines improved steadily; airframes stayed wood, wire and fabric for a decade, because the tactical lesson everyone drew from 1918 was that fights are won by out-turning the other man at low speed — and a biplane does that.

The racers do the research

Technical lead — Britain, Italy, USA

No air ministry would pay for the aerodynamic work the next fighter needed. Air racing did. The Schneider Trophy took Rolls-Royce from the R engine to the Merlin; the American circuit and NACA produced the drag cowling; stressed-skin metal and retractable gear arrived as answers to racing problems. The Hawker Fury is the biplane at its absolute peak, and a dead end. The S.6B is not a fighter and is here because it is where the Spitfire's engine came from.

The monoplane revolution

Edge — Soviet

The Polikarpov I-16 was the first cantilever monoplane fighter with retractable undercarriage in service anywhere, and over Madrid in 1936 it humiliated the Heinkel He 51. The enabling change was not the airframe but the concession that followed it: Germany accepted that the biplane era was over and stopped arguing. Note what the stat cards show — the I-16's wing loading is more than double the CR.32's. That is the whole argument between angle fighting and energy fighting, in one number.

Spain settles it

Edge — Germany

Two things, neither of them the airframe. Direct fuel injection in the DB 601 kept running under negative g where a float-carburettor Merlin cut out; and the Rotte and Schwarm, worked out by Mölders over Spain, put two and four aircraft into a flexible fighting formation while the RAF and the Armée de l'Air still flew rigid three-aircraft vics. Britain's answer was ordered but not yet delivered.

The Luftwaffe is a system, not a Bf 109

Edge — Germany

The Bf 109 E was not decisively better than a Hurricane. What surrounded it was: a radio in every cockpit, the Schwarm, ground-to-air liaison, and commanders who concentrated fighters where they mattered. The Bf 110 was supposed to be the long-range weapon and was found out within a year.

The Dowding System

Edge — Britain, defensively

The margin was on the ground. Chain Home, the filter room and sector control made the first working integrated air defence network, turning interception from luck into a process. The aeroplanes mattered — 100-octane fuel and constant-speed propellers improved the ones already in service — but a Spitfire without the system behind it is just a fast aeroplane in a large sky.

No challengerNothing on this side set a standard the other had to answer.

Two shocks, on two different clocks

Edge — Axis, in both hemispheres

The Fw 190 arrived over France and comprehensively beat the Spitfire V; its enabling piece was the Kommandogerät, a single-lever engine computer that let a tired pilot fly the BMW 801 properly. The A6M's advantage was not technology but range and a small cadre of superbly trained naval aircrew — an asset that could not be replaced once spent. This is the era where a single global bar is least honest, and the strip below is where it admits it.

Swings — Allied

The single most important object of the air war is not an aeroplane: it is the two-stage two-speed supercharger, married to 100/130-octane fuel. The Spitfire IX was a Mk V airframe with a Merlin 61 dropped into it, in service within months of the Fw 190 shock. In the Pacific there was no technical fix required at all — Japan lost its trained aircrew at Midway and Guadalcanal and had no pipeline to replace them.

Escort, and a change of orders

Edge — Allies, decisively

Two changes, one mechanical and one administrative. The drop tank gave the escort the range to reach Berlin; then Doolittle released the escorts to hunt rather than nurse the bomber stream, which turned escort into a deliberate attrition campaign against the German fighter force. Behind both: Allied pilots reaching squadrons with 300-plus hours against German replacements with well under a hundred.

Jets, too late

Edge — Allies, absolutely

The clearest technical lead of the entire war belonged to the side losing it. The Me 262 was faster than anything opposing it and could not be exploited: the oil campaign took the fuel, dispersal took the build quality, and the Jumo 004's twenty-five-hour turbine life took the rest. This is the shape of the last era of the First World War repeated exactly — a superb fighter, and no means left to push the pendulum with it.

Straight wings, borrowed research

Edge — West, nominally

Every power read the same captured German swept-wing and axial-compressor work at the same time. The straight-wing first generation went into service anyway because it could be built now. The consequential decision of the period was commercial: Britain sold Rolls-Royce Nene engines to the Soviet Union in 1946, and got the MiG-15 back four years later.

The swept wing, and the MiG shock

Edge — USSR

Sweeping the wing reduces the airflow velocity across it, delaying the transonic drag rise and letting the aeroplane work much closer to Mach 1. The MiG-15 put a 35° wing on a light airframe around a copied Nene, and over Korea it out-climbed and out-ceilinged everything the UN had. It made the B-29 obsolete in a fortnight.

Korea: the aircraft were close, the pilots were not

Edge — USA, on exchange ratio

The MiG climbed higher and turned better at altitude; the Sabre dived faster and rolled quicker. What decided it was three pieces of equipment and one demographic fact: the all-flying tail, which kept pitch authority when shockwaves made a conventional elevator useless; the radar-ranging gunsight, which computed deflection faster than a person can; the G-suit; and a large pool of combat-experienced pilots against mostly ab-initio opponents. The famous kill ratio is heavily contested and belongs in a range, not a headline.

Supersonic in level flight

Contested — no honest winner

The afterburner, Whitcomb's area rule and irreversible powered flight controls arrive together, and the question stops being who can turn and becomes who can accelerate. The F-100 got there first and was dangerous in the process; the Hunter and the MiG-17 were the better aeroplanes to fly; the MiG-19 matched the F-100 and beat it into squadron service in numbers. Compare the wing loadings on this row against the Sopwith Camel's 30.7 kg/m² and the whole period is visible in one figure.

What fifty-two years of this actually shows

The airframe is rarely the variable

Count the enabling changes above. A synchroniser, a squadron structure, a written doctrine, a radar chain, a fuel-injection pump, a supercharger and an octane rating, a drop tank, an order releasing escorts to hunt, a gunsight, an export licence for an engine. Perhaps four of the sixteen swings were caused by an aeroplane being better.

The best aircraft usually arrives too late to matter

The Fokker D.VII, the Me 262 and the Siemens-Schuckert D.IV were all the finest of their kind and all belonged to the side that lost. Germany ended both world wars holding a technical lead it had no fuel, pilots or factories left to spend. Performance without production is a footnote.

The pilot pipeline decides the long wars

Bloody April was lost in the RFC's training schools. The Zero's advantage died at Midway with the aircrew who flew it, not with the aeroplane. By 1944 Allied pilots reached squadrons with three hundred hours against German replacements with under a hundred. The line moves where the trained aircrew are.

You can watch the physics change in one column

Wing loading runs from 27 kg/m² on a 1914 pusher to 352 on an F-100 — a thirteen-fold rise in fifty years. Every jump is a change of fighting style: angle to energy, energy to acceleration. The Sopwith Camel and the Super Sabre are not the same kind of object.

Notes — Dates are first meaningful front-line service, not first flight; types overlap by years, so a band marks where the balance sat rather than a hard cut-off. The lean bar measures who set the standard the other side had to answer, which is not always the same as who held local air superiority — during the Second World War the theatre strip under each era is where that distinction is spelled out.

Stat cards are drawn from the {{Aircraft specs}} templates of the linked Wikipedia articles and converted to metric; wing loading is calculated from loaded weight over wing area. Where an article covers a family, the card is the variant its specification table describes, so it is a representative mark, not the whole type. Hand-entered figures from standard references were needed for the Bf 109 G-6 (the family article carries no specification table), the Me 163, the Tempest, the Taube and a handful of early weights and ceilings.

Treat Soviet and late-war Japanese figures with suspicion. Published Soviet performance generally comes from a single lightened NII-VVS test airframe; serial machines were slower and heavier. Japanese late-war figures disagree substantially between Allied technical-intelligence tests, often flown on Allied fuel at reduced boost, and post-war manufacturer statements. The Korean kill ratio is contested and is deliberately not given as a number.

Photographs and aircraft names link to Wikipedia; images are Wikimedia Commons lead photographs cropped to a common ratio and desaturated for consistency — hover or tab to one to see it in colour. Many show preserved airframes or flying replicas rather than wartime machines.
